Construction of McBain and Trush Environmental Services Building, an energy efficient commercial/residential space.

McBAIN/TRUSH BUILDING
The construction of the McBain/Trush Building marks the transformation of a former car lot into one of the most energy efficient buildings in the Arcata area, reflecting the sensibilities of the owners and making a companion statement to the mission of their business, which is centered on watershed restoration.
The building continues the City of Arcata goal of including residential spaces in commercial projects, to maintain the downtown core as a “livable” area. its one apartment has bay and mountain views from the garage-top deck.
FEATURES
The project represented several new challenges to the Pacific Builders including the use of Structural Integrated Panel Systems (SiPS) for not only the wall framing, but for the complex roof structure as well. The building utilizes both photovoltaic panels and solar water heating systems. The solar water system is integrated with the radiant heating system in the slab floor.
The building is finished inside with a stained concrete floor, locally harvested Tan Oak and a lobby fountain crafted with local rock gathered from riverbeds by the clients.
The landscaping of the project is highlighted by the “day lighting” of Janes Creek as it runs through the property. in years past, Janes Creek had been buried beneath streets and culverts; as part of the City of Arcata long term mission, it now is restored to its’ natural course and riparian environment, at least on the McBain Trush property.
